Vacation Bible school is something just about every congregation I know of participates in each year. Leaders come together, decide on a theme and curriculum, find volunteers, and begin the sometimes difficult task of putting it all together. VBS is a time to stop in the middle of our busy summer schedule and immerse our children into the faith we proclaim.

This year, the title of our VBS was Renew. The Bible verse we listened to each day came from Matthew 13, known as the parable of the sower. We learned how God plants seeds in us. We discovered how environmental factors around us can play a role in how well the seed grows. We talked about weeds that choke and water that nourishes. The cost for VBS this year was very minimal as most of our materials, games, and crafts were all recycled in one form or another. Therefore, another element to our learning about seeds and growth was our care for the earth.

All in all, it was a great week filled with fun, food, laughter, singing, and growing in the Kingdom of God. Wouldn’t it be great if we had this same VBS spirit all of the time? Wouldn’t it be great if we went through each day remembering that a seed has been planted in us? Wouldn’t it be great if we remembered that being a follower of Christ means growing, planting, and bearing fruit for the glory of God?

Vocation Bible school is something we can do every day. The Word of God is a powerful seed that has been planted in each of us. It’s a word of hope, grace, and love that sustains and challenges us along the way. Vocation Bible school is not something to be done one week out of the summer, Vocation Bible school is an ongoing journey we all share as faithful followers of Christ.
