Come, Holy Spirit…

Every morning during breakfast I play a little game on my phone called Wordle.  It’s an online game where you have 6 chances to figure out a 5-letter word.  If you select a correct letter that’s in the right spot, the letter turns green, if you select a correct letter in the wrong spot, it turns yellow.  Some days I get it in 3 or 4 tries and other days it takes 5 or 6 attempts.  On occasion, I don’t guess the correct word at all.  But here’s what makes it fun:  I play with my son Jake who lives in Charlottesville.  It’s a neat way to connect with him each morning as we compete to see who can guess the word in the fewest attempts.  Sometimes it’s easy to beat Jake, sometimes it’s not.  It can be easy, it can be frustrating, it can be mind-boggling, and it can be simple.  Every morning is different.

This month we celebrate the gift of Pentecost.  The coming of the Holy Spirit each day into our lives reminds me of morning Wordle games with Jake.  Some days it’s delightful and “easy” as the Spirit directs me into meaningful discipleship opportunities.  On other days, it can be frustrating and mind-boggling as I try to figure out exactly what the Spirit is leading me into!

This month we pray for Kaitlyn and Henry as they affirm their baptism on Pentecost Day.  We give thanks for their learning throughout Confirmation and their ongoing journey with God.  A big part of Confirmation is not having the right answers, but learning to ask the right questions.  We pray for the Holy Spirit to continue stirring their souls for the road ahead.  Sometimes this discipleship road will be clear and easy, sometimes it will be frustrating and hard, but in the end it’s like my breakfast with Jake, where the holy enters into a relationship with us each new day, stirring our minds toward the wonderful viewpoints of God.   Come Holy Spirit…

In God’s Peace,

Pastor Derek
